Letter to save a Liger
Dear Jim Fran, Manager of Paradise Animals and member of the ministry of the environment,
Ligers are very rare hybrid animals and need to be cared for. However, I feel like you are not giving poor Julia a good enough home. She is a liger after all, and there are not that many in the world. Have you ever felt alone? Whenever I, Zookeeper Katherine Lees, feed or play with Julia she seems lonely and wants someone to play with other than a human.
Julia is not a shy animal, and is playful. She needs space and a pool to play in. You know ligers love to swim, which they inherit from the tiger mother. Ligers are also big cats which they inherit from the lion father. Therefore, they need a large enclosure, some rocks and a couple of fake trees. Inherited from the lion father (the only big cats to live in a group) ligers love company. Julia has not seen a lion or a tiger for 7 years. Ligers can get along with either lions or tigers. Both lions and tigers are endangered. We need to make sure ligers have good living conditions and are well cared for. Ligers cannot live in the wild for they cannot live with a pride of lions or by itself. This is because 1) they do not know how to look after themselves, 2) Ligers do not like to live alone like a tigers do and they cannot live in a pride because the lions would not recognize the liger as a friend.
Julia is a rare specimen. I know she must be well cared for. I know many people would donate for a new enclosure. I’m sure the attendance would rise if people saw Julia playing with a tiger or lion. I know somebody with a tiger Julia’s age willing to sell the tiger to us at a good price. I’m sure it will come to a profit and Julia will be happier. Julia will be easier to feed or play with. Julia will also be less of a picky eater and that will save money from the food bill.
I would like to say thank you and that you must always remember we are all animals in a way. Yet we may not be treated like them. It is the teacher or the person who cares for the animal who shapes the personality and feelings of a life. You may change a life.
Sincerely
Katherine Lees, liger zookeeper
